THE NJ TWELVE: MORAL, BRAVE, AND ON THE SIDE OF LIFE
(UPI/Brian Kersey)
By STEVE MALZBERG

If your boss suddenly told you that in order to keep your job, you would have to participate in something that you found to be morally wrong and against your religious beliefs—what would you do? What if it involved the taking of a life? “Crazy,” you say? Couldn't happen? Well it has happened, according to a dozen nurses from the University of Medicine and Dentistry, right here in New Jersey.
"I'm a nurse so I can help people, not help kill them," the words of one of the brave nurses who has filed a lawsuit against UMDNJ, claiming that the hospital has started forcing them to help with abortions. They say that while they wouldn't have to be involved with the actual procedure, they would be required to tend to the patients, both before and after they end the life of their unborn babies.
All of this is taking place about nine months after the Obama administration overturned much of the so-called "conscience" regulation that President Bush had put into place shortly before he left office in early 2009. It allowed for doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other medical workers to opt out of taking part in, or playing a role in, procedures that they objected to on a moral, religious or personal bases. Federal funding would be cut off for violators including hospitals, clinics and health plans.
You may recall that back in 2005, the left was up in arms as pharmacists from all over the country started to refuse to fill prescriptions for birth control pills, especially the "morning-after" pill, which many consider to be nothing more than a pill-induced abortion. Reaction was most predictable. Rachel Laser of the National Women's Law Center in Washington told the Washington Post at the time, "It's outrageous. It's sex discrimination. It prevents access to a basic form of health care for women. We're going back in time." Yes, health care for woman has always been about the ability to kill one's unborn child, hasn't it?
Even though many states have their own laws in place to deal with the objector issue, Obama and company couldn't help themselves and bowed to the pressure from their base. They claim that protections remain for doctors and nurses that do not want to actually perform an abortion, but much of the language that gave protections to those who would do the dirty work before, after and in between, was eliminated by Obama.
The hysterical outcry maintained that the Bush regulations were leading us down a slippery slope; a slope that would lead to making it harder for women to kill their unborn babies. "Without rescission of this regulation, we would see tremendous discrimination against patients based on their behavior and based on who they are. We would see real people suffer and more women could die." Those are the words of Susan Fogel of the National Health Law Program, also speaking to the Washington Post. In her world, many believe that medical professionals should be forced to comply with whatever the government deems as legal. If you don't go along with it, you could lose your livelihood, which brings us right back to the New Jersey 12 (the nurses who sued) and UMDNJ.
Once again, New Jersey Congressman Chris Smith is standing up for life by standing, side by side, with the 12 nurses. The Republican from the 4th Congressional District was at their press conference and the way he sees it, UMDNJ could lose some $60 million in federal funds if the nurses are correct in their allegations.
New Jersey has laws on the books that do protect these 12 nurses and all other such objectors from having to take part in an abortion. Last month, a judge granted a request, which temporarily stops the hospital from making the nurses train to be a part of the abortion team. If these brave women lose in their legal efforts, all bets are off. If your beliefs tell you that abortion is murder, then what difference does it make if you are actually in the room assisting in the taking of a life, or you are spared of the act itself, but help facilitate it both before and after it occurs?
This is the new slippery slope brought about by the new Obama regulations. Remember with whom we are dealing. When Chicago State Senator Obama was presented with the chance to vote that a baby born of a botched abortion be given all of the same rights and medical attention granted to babies born in a delivery room, he voted "present." Remember that vote when you vote next November.

I used to think like that Annie, but being able to see the baby in the womb, changed my point of view. I don't feel like a woman snuferifg for nine months outweighs the life of the baby. And there are few real cases for having to choose someones life over the other, so many Doctor's who are pro-abortion seem to believe that just the mental stress is enough to make that choice. They do need to be held accountable!Did you see all those reports out of Philadephia, with Dr. Gosnell earlier this year? There have been several of them that have been convicted of murder, but just reading the details of the abortion clinic was horrorfying!
