WASHINGTON (UPI) -- U.S. President Obama and presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney are in tight races in three contested states, NBC News-Marist polls indicate.

Obama has a 4 percentage point advantage in Michigan and North Carolina, and the two candidates tied in New Hampshire, results from three NBC News-Marist polls released Thursday said.

In Michigan, Obama leads by 4 percentage points over Romney, 47 percent to 43 percent, results said.

Obama has a 46 percent-to-44 percent edge over Romney in North Carolina, within the survey's margin of error, results showed.

In New Hampshire, the two are tied at 45 percent each.

In two states, Obama's approval ratings were more positive than negative. In Michigan, 48 percent of registered voters approve of his job, while 42 percent disapprove. His approval ratings were 47 percent to 45 percent in New Hampshire and tied at 47 percent in North Carolina, the polls said.

In Michigan, 37 percent say they have favorable impression of Romney while 43 percent said they have an unfavorable opinion. In North Carolina, Romney's favorable-unfavorable ratings were 40 percent and 42 percent. New Hampshire, where Romney has a home and which borders Massachusetts, where Romney was governor, voters were evenly split at 45 percent.

The three telephone polls were conducted Sunday and Monday with 1,078 registered voters in Michigan, 1,029 registered voters in New Hampshire and 1,019 registered voters in North Carolina. The margins of error are 3.1 percentage points for the New Hampshire and North Carolina surveys and 3 percentage points in Michigan.
