WASHINGTON (UPI) -- U.S. President Barack Obama asserted executive privilege over documents related to the Justice Department's Fast and Furious operation, officials said.

Executive privilege enables the Justice Department to withhold documents subpoenaed by U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa, who heads of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee, CBS News reported Wednesday.

Issa, a California Republican, told reporters he intends to move forward with a contempt vote against Attorney General Eric Holder, who tried and failed Tuesday to negotiate an agreement with congressional leaders that would have avoided a contempt vote.

Issa had set a 10 a.m. Wednesday deadline for Holder to submit documents on the investigation into the Fast and Furious anti-gun running campaign.

"If we receive no documents we'll go forward, if we receive documents we'll evaluate them and we'll take some time as is necessary in delay to be sure of the quality of these documents," Issa said after a 20-minute meeting with Holder.

The Justice Department has already provided the House panel and the Senate Judiciary Committee with 7,000 pages of documents, and Holder said he offered more. But Issa said the department submitted 80,000 pages to its inspector general.

In the Fast and Furious operation, federal agents between 2009 and 2011 allowed suspected illegal gun buys to go through and attempted to track the guns to Mexican drug cartels. Most of the weapons disappeared, with some resurfacing when they were used in crimes -- including two guns involved in the killing of a U.S. border agent.

"The attorney general wants to trade a briefing and the promise of delivering some small, unspecified set of documents tomorrow for a free pass today," Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, said.

Oh, I know that! I'm just tired of process. I think that the truth about that truth is alaerdy perfectly clear to both Holder and Obama. Nothing has actually happened to them because of their refusal to comply with the law and I see no reason to believe that anything will happen to them. I'm talking consequences. Unless something IS actually going to happen to them, more process and more paperwork really isn't meaningful, is it? I'm tired of press conferences, statements, hearings, threats and subpoenas. Process and rule of law are not the same thing. I fully understand that the rule of law requires process, but it does not equal rule of law. Republicans too often behave as though it does, and the progs love playing along and stringing things out.

Hi Sharon Eric Holder has an obligation to obey the law. Executive Privildge is for State Secrets and nothnig like that is involved in this issue. There is no justification to deny congress (you and I and our representatives) this information. This is to make that truth clear to Holder and Obama. bbptnxeb [link=]vksjth[/link]

Mike Vanderboegh and David Codrea have done such an outstanding job of binngrig the truth to the forefront about and breaking Fast and Furious.I can't help but wonder: When Akaobama invoked executive privilege excusing comrade holder's contempt of congress is it not true that executive privilege does not extend to the attorney general and therefore is being used to cover up corruption in the executive branch?
