New York governor signs cyberbullying law

ALBANY, N.Y. (UPI) -- New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has signed anti-cyberbullying legislation that puts more responsibility on schools to monitor and report incidents.

The law, which Cuomo signed Monday but doesn't go into effect for another year, defines the crime as harassment, on or off school grounds, taking place through any electronic means, and that "reasonably causes or would reasonably be expected to cause physical injury or emotional harm to a student." the measure creates a system for reports of cyberbullying to reach school administrators and calls for teacher training to better identify the crime, the Buffalo News reported.

The new law does not include tougher penalties for those who harass others via social media that had been sought by some lawmakers and bullying victims, the newspaper said.

The new law, passed by the Legislature last month, follows the suicide in September 2011 of 14-year-old Jamie Rodemeyer of Williamsville, N.Y., a suburb of Buffalo, who blogged about the bullying he endured at school for being gay. Local police were ineffective in pursuing a case, they said at the time, because of the vagueness of state law as it pertains to cyberbullying.

it was reported, but ntnoihg was done. Now more laws and policies are passed regarding bullying, but we need to do more to change the culture of bullying, build good character and restore civility.Together we can make a difference. Family, friends galore, schools, churches, YMCA's, Boys and Girls Clubs, etc join the Nationwide Rock It Across America Challenge to help change the culture of bullying, encourage a safer learning atmosphere and environment for students and educators while kids get fit and healthy. United, teamwork and connected there is power showing nationwide support that all of us are on one accord affirming every child is important and bullying is not acceptable. Rock It is a fun, new and unique character building exercise CD/DVD created by diverse groups of kids who want to make a difference, that has anti-bully input, builds self-esteem, builds confidence, encourages kids to achieve and instill values while providing an effective workout.

Listening to this story brings me back to eemaentlry school. I was never bullied nor did I bully. Bu t I was neutral and never stepped up to say it was wrong. I still to this day think about how I could have made a difference and try to empower my children to stand up for kids that are getting bullied and am proud to hear that I have heard storied from teachers of them doing just that. However, as I listen to Amanda Todd's story I think back to a eemaentlry school as I often do about a girl that was bullied relentllesly. Today I found her on facebook and sent her the following message a little late but I wanted her to know how I felt and that I tuly am sorry that I never stood up for her when we were children. Of note I am 40 years old and have never forgotten how terrible she must have felt. Hey there,This message is going to sound crazy and out of the blue but in light of all the publicity around Amanda Todd I feel compelled to tell you something I should have many many years ago. I want you to know that I think about you often and how your were relentlesly bullied throughout eemaentlry school Although I never particpated in the ACTUAL bullying I most certainly did not step up and say anything to stop it. I want you to know that I think about that often and always use it as a lesson when I am talking to my children now about bullying. I encourage them to step up and say something if someone is being bullied and not to just sit back and do nothing. Because, in fact when you do nothing you are enabling the bullies to continue with what they are doing. So, although this is many years too late please accept my apologoes and know that I learned this valuable lesson in life from you and years after the fact you have an impact on who I am today.
