(UPI) -- Stricter requirements for New Jersey diver's licenses were delayed after a court order blocked the "TRU-ID" program set to be implemented Tuesday.
The American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey filed suit against the Motor Vehicles Commission, alleging the program, which requires additional proof of identification before a driver's license is granted, was being implemented without public comment and without following regulatory and legislative procedure.
The program "was stopped on a technicality. It's a technicality called democracy," said ACLU-NJ executive director Deborah Jacobs at a press conference Tuesday in Newark.
The delay means the new licenses, which feature a gold star in the upper-right corner to indicate the license is a federally approved identification document usable to board a domestic airline flight or enter a federal building, will not be issued. Legal arguments are scheduled for Aug. 3 in Mercer County Superior Court, the (Newark, N.J.) Star-Ledger reported Tuesday.
