India's lower Iranian oil imports praised

KOLKATA, India (UPI) -- U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton praised India for reducing Iranian oil imports Monday, but urged more action to pressure Tehran over its nuclear plans.

U.S. officials said India has reduced the amount of oil it buys from Iran in recent months while Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's government grapples with high inflation and is concerned about prices increasing, CNN reported.

"We think India as a country understands the importance of trying to use diplomacy to resolve these difficult threats and is certainly working toward lowering their purchases of Iranian oil," Clinton said in Kolkata, the first stop on her visit to India. "We commend the steps they've taken thus far and hope they will do even more."

The United States and other Western countries are using economic pressure to try to push Iran into halting its nuclear program they fear is for weapons development. Iran says its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes.

Western leaders have encouraged Asian countries that are key buyers of Iranian oil to cut back their purchases. India imports about 70 percent of its oil, with between 10 percent and 14 percent from Iran.

Key world leaders met with Iranian officials this month to discuss the Islamic republic's intentions for its nuclear program. Another meeting is scheduled for later in May.

"We do not believe Iran would have come to the table if there had not been sanctions and pressure," Clinton said. "We do not believe Iran will peacefully resolve this unless the pressure continues."

Hi Yaakov,Good question. As I was renaidg your comments below the cartoon it brought to mind a street poll that was held around America. One of the questions was: "what state does Kentucky Fried Chicken come from"? Well over 95% didn't know the correct answer to this simple question. Amazing isn't it?The obvious conclusion is that not only are most Americans ignorant of world geography many aren't familiar with US geography.Like you I am an American that moved to Israel many years ago and I still have dual citizenship. As an American I am embarrassed with the lack of knowledge the average American has of the "rest of the world".Hopefully this will change but not if they allow themselves to be dumbed down as they have been for many years now.Iran is a danger to the whole world not only Israel as is evident from all the statements coming out of that regime. So far B Hussein is hemming and hawing about taking the necessary steps against them and in the end Israel will have to show the way since the immediate threat is against Israel. Will the world support such an action? We'll have to wait and see but I can assure you that there are many Muslim countries that will be happy when it happens cos they to are in danger from the Iranian threat.

All I could think seeing those pirctues of mini-Hariri in Tehran was that he must have a really sore case of penis envy... don't you wish your patrons were more like mine? Must seem sad being Saudi's man in Lebanon when you see what the Iranians are up to.
