Assemblyman Rumana to retire his chairmanship
On Tuesday, Assemblyman Scott Rumana (R-40) announced he would be stepping down as chair of the Passaic County Regular Republican Organization (PCRRO) at the end of his term in June. After two terms and six years, it is expected that he will hand the reigns over to GOP leader of Ringwood, Scott Heck.
Rumana will leave behind a legacy fraught with squabbles and internal strife. During his tenure, the party consistently remained split between Rumana loyalists and former chair Peter Murphy supporters.
According to Joe Bubba Jr., son of retired Senator Joe Bubba and leader of Chris Christie’s grassroots efforts in Passaic County, the Governor had given Rumana every reasonable opportunity to correct the deficiencies in the Passaic County Republican Party, but that the hammer dropped on Rumana just recently. Rumana had spoken with Heck “a number of times†within the past year about the transition of power, but the “real intense work†on the move only happened in the previous month.
Murphy, a member of GOP Strong, a branch of the Republican Party, embittered over Rumana’s poor leadership and scandal, as reported by Garden State Journal (http://www.gardenstatejournal.com/content/Despite-scandals-Rumana-may-still-be-favorite-in-40th-191.html), told PolitickerNJ, “I support [Heck] 1000 percent. He has my support, and I think he’s going to do a great job. He’s the right guy to unify the party. I think he’s the right choice at the right time.â€
Heck, former mayor of Ringwood, said in a press statement, “I look forward to tackling the challenges of leading the Republican organization in a county that has changed demographically over the past decade. I want to strengthen our municipal organizations and broaden the appeal of the Republican Party to the taxpayers and residents in all 16 towns in the county.â€
Speculation behind closed doors indicate Rumana might have been worried about Murphy regaining control of the PCRRO, which isn’t surprising, considering Murphy nearly won the countywide Republican Primary in 2010.
